Simple Meditation
Beginning meditation, as a new comer
to “peaceful sitting”, takes some dedication and
an ability to create an environment of quiet and comfortable
space. Time management for meditating is possible even with
this fast paced North American lifestyle most of us experience.
The idea is to find a dedicated time in your day to sit and
breath for as little as 10-20 minutes or for as long as you
are able to—ROUTINE HELPS!!!!
Take some conscious effort in meditation and achieve clarity,
direction, strength, stability, relaxation, peace and joy–simple
living.
My latest inspiration in meditation came
from the “Shambhala Sun” publication, March 2003
issue—“The Nine Stages of Training the Mind.”
Read this for a detailed look at a meditation practice.
The following are some simple steps to begin meditation:
- Prepare the body
with gentle stretching/yoga to create a supple body in order
to sit comfortably. This will also help if your brain is
“buzzing” from a busy day and are not able to
settle down.
- Sitting Posture
in a chair without any back support (so you don’t
fall asleep) or on the floor with pillows under your seat
are some suggested positions.
- Whatever your position,
work on keeping your spine
straight in order to improve the energy flow. Crossing your
legs is optional especially for people with knee problems
or flexibility issues.
- Focus Breathing
deeply and slowly, in from your nose and out from your mouth.
Focus on your breathing throughout your meditation time.
Simple. Your mind will wonder in thought, dreams, emotions
and events. Your work is to acknowledge that you are in
this state of drift and to bring yourself back to focused
breathing. The conscious awareness of your breath will become
stronger and constant through practice.
- Open Eye Meditation
is another form of meditation. Walking, gardening, golfing...
are other ways to practice meditation in order to clear
the mind and reduce stress. This will also help improve
your fitness level.
“Sharpen the mind by clearing
the “tangles” of thoughts will bring more peace
in your day.”

Case
Study “Pain in the Neck”
Mr. R. is a 58 year old patient complaining of neck pain
with tingling sensations down both arms, with more pain on
the right side of his neck and arm. The pain was constant
yet manageable with occasional acute flare-ups. He has been
complaining of neck pain for years, working in a stressful
job as a teacher and long hours sitting in front of his computer
with poor posture (slouching) which I believe aggravated and
encouraged his condition. He took early retirement, 3 years
ago, do to his current condition.
Through X-rays, Mr. R. was diagnosed with degenerative disk
disease (nerves) at the C-5 to C-7 cervical (base of neck)
region by his medical doctor.
Mr. R. began Massage Therapy treatments in April of 2002.
It took 8 treatments of 1 hour sessions within a 3 month time
span to solve his condition.
The Massage Therapist focused on the affected area by:
- Decompressing the spinal cord and pressure on the neck
joints.
- Decreasing muscle tension and restrictions.
- Increasing flexibility and Range of motion of the neck.
- Improving posture.
- Increasing strength.
- Home-care exercises from strengthening/ flexibility/ deep
breathing…where strongly encouraged.
Mr. R., since then, has been receiving Massage Therapy 1 time
per month in order to prevent and improve his general health
and wellness.
Mr. R. has learned how to take better care of his neck and improve
his posture. Currently, he is an avid computer user and enjoys
his retirement time at his cottage—working on new building
projects (lifting and chopping wood…) in
a pain free world (at least his neck and arms).
As Mr. R. says, “ People do not have to suffer all
their lives with pain…this is what I thought I was
facing, but now I am pain free!”

Recovery Cleanse
Great idea for improving energy, decreasing congestion problems
& strengthening the immune system
DAY 1:
Eat only fruit and all you want (no bananas). This
will cleanse the colon ( your waste paper basket).
DAY 2:
Drink only herb teas all you want, such as, raspberry,
hyssop, chamomile, or peppermint. Sweeten slightly with honey
or maple sugar if needed. This day will release toxins, salt,
and excessive calcium deposits in the muscles, tissue and
organs.
DAY 3:
Eat all vegetables you want. Have them raw, steamed
or both. The third day the digestive tract is supplied with
healthful, mineral rich bulk.
DAY 4:
Make a big pot of vegetable broth by boiling cauliflower,
cabbage, onion, green pepper, parsley, or whatever you have
available. Season with sea salt. Drink only this rich mineral
broth all day long. On this last day, the blood lymph, and
inner organs are mineralized.
